Groups where fellowship is based on the shared struggle for a sometimes questionable greater whole are on the rise again in society.
Brotherly , a choreographic work for three diverse dancers, turns the gaze towards the human in such groups - to bodies firmly bound by principles, yet voluntary participants in their own restriction. To this end, Brotherly explores the controlled body in traditional forms of Irish dance, specifically Riverdance - bodies in a line, with arms tight and immobile against the torso, and spirited footwork; a form that emerged in response to British rule during the 19th century, originally a revival of Irish culture, now evolved into the competitive scene it is today.
In the trio Brotherly, Irish step dance merges with contemporary dance into a restless journey where three bodies are bound by a double-edged dynamism; a gradual revealing of the human spirit through struggle, yet also the life giving and playfulness of companionship.
